The prison authorities are claiming that Valery Ivashchenko does not have any illness which should prevent him from attending the court hearing on Thursday expected to pass verdict in one of the cases which has aroused international concern despite Monday’s hearing having been held with Mr Ivashchenko lying on a stretcher

TV Channel 5 reports that the prison authorities are claiming that Valery Ivashchenko does not have any illness which should prevent him from attending the court hearing on Thursday expected to pass verdict in one of the cases which has aroused international concern. This is despite the fact that the hearing on Monday was held in a convoy room (to which most journalists and relatives could not be admitted) with Mr Ivashchenko lying on a stretcher.  His wife says that her husband has back problems and he has partially lost feeling in his legs. She says that after a year and a half in SIZO [detention centre] his blood sugar level has risen and he suffers from high blood pressure and chronic bronchitis.

Valery Ivashchenko has been in detention since August 2010, with his detention and prosecution being among the main cases mentioned in all reports and resolutions concerning the allegations of selective prosecution.   He is charged with having, in November 2009 while Acting Minister of Defence abused his position by signing a plan to sell the Feodosia Marine Engineering Works which was property of the Ministry of Defence.  More details can be found in the Second Preliminary Report by the Danish Helsinki Committee on Human Rights, where Valery Ivashchenko’s case is one of those examined
