Vasyl Cherepanyn, head of the Visual Culture Research Centre and a lecturer at the Cultural Studies Department of National University ‘Kyiv-Mohyla Academy’ was attacked in the centre of Kyiv on Tuesday evening almost certainly by right-wing thugs and badly injured. On the basis of their gear and the unfounded accusations they seem to have made, the far-right organization S14 is strongly suspected.

The Centre reports that at around 19.15 while standing at a tram stop some men in paramilitary camouflage gear simply attacked him and began savagely beating him in full view of passers-by.  The police were very slow to appear and none of the assailants was apprehended.

Cherepanym sustained serious injuries, including fractured facial bones.  He considers the attack to be linked with his professional activities.  As well as his work for the university and the Visual Culture Research Centre, Cherepanym is also editor of the journal Politychna Krytyka.  He was one of the organizers of a major conference Ukraine: Thinking Together earlier this year.

Nobody was caught, but it seems likely that the assailants were from a far-right organization.  They apparently accused Cherepanym with no justification at all of being a ‘separatist’.

The Centre notes that aggressive behaviour by ignorant thugs bandying around unfounded accusations is on the increase.  It says that these ignorant individuals are trying “to impose their ideology of hatred upon Ukrainian society, and to suppress any manifestations of critical thought”.

They demand a swift investigation into the attack and also “of the activities of paramilitary groups that use the war in Ukraine as a pretext to justify their own misanthropic views.”
