According to the Head of Ukraine’s National Union of Journalists sees a major problem in Ukraine being the fact that businesspeople see their media interests as solely for political influence and lobbying

According to the Head of Ukraine’s National Union of Journalists, one of the main problems impeding media development in Ukraine is the fact that for many rich media owners their media concerns are not key areas of activity.

Oleh Nalyvaiko, speaking at the World Media Summit in Mosocw, said that owning a media publication or TV channel was prestigious and fashionable.  “Unfortunately they’re needed not for business or for carrying out social civic functions, but for political influence and lobbying interests. It’s for that reason that media projects are so easily begun and terminated although throughout the world the media are about business, not a pass into an oligarchs’ club.”
