Arguments of German doctors v. those of President Yanukovych
21.05.12

Lithuania’s President Dalia Grybauskaite was the first President to be allowed to visit Yulia Tymoshenko
Dr Karl-Max Karl Max Einhaupl of the Charite Clinic in Berlin has called on Ukraine’s leaders to take a “humane” step and allow former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko to be treated in Berlin. President Yanukovych stated on Sunday on national television that ruling majority deputies were against changing the law so that convicted prisoners can receive treatment abroad. He said: “Imagine tomorrow thousands of prisoners who have money will begin to corrupt the medical sphere – doctors”.
Yanukovych’s words came after Dr Einhaupl expressed doubts about “the political patient” being able to get proper treatment in Ukraine, and said that his doubts had probably heightened.
Ms Tymoshenko was moved to the Ukrzaliznitsa Clinic in Kyiv where her treatment is under the supervision of a doctor from the Charite Clinic. Another representative of the Clinic is due to arrive on Monday 21 May.
Dr Einhaupl says that it is not clear yet whether Ms Tymoshenko will undergo an operation. He stresses that her situation is complicated by the fact that she has had the condition for over half a year during which time it was not adequately treated or not treated at all. He says that even after MRT showed the spinal ulcer, this continued to be ignored with the “argument” being that many people suffer from this.
