Outgoing Ombudsperson demands criminal investigation over Tymoshenko’s injuries
Nina Karpachova has demanded that the Prosecutor General initiate a criminal investigation and suspend those officials implicated in the ill-treatment of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko during the latter’s transportation from the Kachanivska Penal Colony to hospital. She confirmed that Ms Tymoshenko has injuries to the forearm, right elbow and stomach.
Ms Karpachova stated at a briefing on Wednesday that the treatment could fall under Article 3 of the European Convention on Human Rights (prohibition of torture and ill-treatment – translator), the UN Convention against Torture, as well as the Instructions on organizing penal institution security.
She also demanded that the head of the State Penitentiary Service Oleksandr Lisitskova urgently provided Ms Tymoshenko with proper medical care as per the instructions of the European Court of Human Rights and conclusions of Ukrainian and independent foreign doctors.
