19 volumes of a National Book of Remembrance to be published

At a meeting of the Committee on preparations for marking the 75th anniversary of Holodomor in Ukraine, the Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Vasyunyk spoke of considerable measures taken by the authorities at central and regional level to prepare for the anniversary.

He said that the work had been carried out on a large scale with around 200 thousand accounts from witnesses gathered.  These will be published in 19 volumes (one for the whole country, one for Kyiv and 17 regional volumes) by the end of October, with the presentation planned for 21 November. 

“In Ukraine at the present time there are four hundred thousand elderly people, over eighty years old, who lived through Holodomor. These are people who witnessed those events. Therefore 200 thousand pieces of testimony are by one measure sufficient, yet by another – each day in the life of such an elderly person is for us immeasurably valuable”.

Mr Vasyunyk called on researchers to continue gathering testimony, since the National Book of Remembrance will be supplemented and updated with new material.

He also stressed the need for clearly planned and coordinated action by the authorities of all levels to ensure proper preparation for the remembrance activities on 21-22 November. These include the unveiling of the first phase of the Memorial Complex in Memory of the Victims of Holodomor, a memorial service, the “33 minutes” action, a nationwide minute of silence, a remembrance lesson in all schools, broadcast of documentaries and a memorial postage stamp.
