The EU has noted the new criminal investigation initiated against former Prime Minister and opposition leader, Yulia Tymoshenko, Maja Kocijanicic, Spokesperson for the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy (Catherine Ashton) has stated.

Ms Kocijanicic noted that the initiating of a new prosecution by the Security Service [SBU] only days after the verdict was announced in a trial which “does not meet international standards on honest, transparency and judicial independence” was an indication of selective use of the law for politically motivated prosecutions of opposition leaders.

She said that the EU would be following developments and again stressed the need to ensure judicial proceedings in keeping with international standards.
